Often perceived as the black sheep of the genre, rock music in France has never enjoyed the recognition and fervor it receives across the Channel. Given the protest values so deeply ingrained in the French people, one would think our passionate nation would be the ideal candidate to become highly prolific in the field—perfectly aligning with the very essence of a musical style built on the refusal of convention and political correctness.
Yet, the lyrical flair and linguistic subtlety of the French language have always seemed to run counter to the raw, rebellious aesthetic of rock, acting like two discordant elements that have always held back its rise. Despite this mismatch, we can still applaud a few major, long-lasting acts, though they are aging with each passing decade, and their impact will likely never reach beyond our borders.
However, “impossible” is not French. While rock music might not be the first thing associated with our music scene, it is undeniable that recent years have witnessed a remarkable revival of the genre in our country. This has sparked the rise of an independent, admittedly Anglophile, yet bold scene, backed by increasingly creative and avant-garde labels and artists.
The excitement surrounding this fresh scene inspired this tribute, and it was our duty to cast an even brighter spotlight on these ‘Made in France’ bands that never cease to blow us away with their talent. Without further ado, we invite you to discover our (subjective) selection of 5 current French bands to watch (very) closely.
