Rock music is a universe as rich as it is dense. Since it first appeared in the 1950s, it has constantly evolved alongside changes in our society, giving birth to numerous subgenres. Because navigating all its subtle nuances can be challenging, our team has decided to break down some of rock’s mutations to help you better understand their origins and characteristics, while recommending essential listens to refine your musical knowledge.
Today, we continue our journey with stoner rock. Born in the 1990s, this movement traces its roots back to the desert regions of California, between Palm Desert and Joshua Tree, during an era marked by a revival of interest in the psychedelic music of previous decades. At the time, a new generation of musicians was searching for fresh inspiration, aiming to push contemporary boundaries through a powerful, slow, and hypnotic sound.
Stoner rock stands out from other musical genres with its heavy, distortion-laden riffs, a driving groove-based dynamic, and a psychedelic atmosphere paired with lysergic lyrics. Unsurprisingly, its name refers to drug use — a derivative of ‘stoned’ — which illustrates the spellbinding nature of a music style often associated with the consumption of various narcotics. The bands that pioneered the movement also embraced the term because it echoed a musical aesthetic advocating for letting go, escapism, and contemplation.
The genre’s mainstream breakthrough was driven by the rise of bands like Kyuss and Sleep, and much later, by the creation of the highly successful outfit Queens of the Stone Age. Much like its cousin grunge, it lives on today, having influenced numerous other genres and shaping doom metal, heavy metal, and alternative rock in its wake.
If you feel ready to venture into Death Valley, arm yourself with patience and let yourself be carried away by our selection of 6 bands to discover this very unique genre.
